How the Penetration Test Is Performed

A nail of 3mm diameter is driven through the cell at a speed of 50mm/sec. Throughout the test the cell shows no fire and no explosion; structure and performance remain stable.

The test simulates the worst case of a cell being physically pierced in service — a condition under which a conventional lithium cell would go into thermal runaway from the resulting internal short. The Safety Battery passes this test and is BSMI certified.

Nail Penetration Test Footage

The cell is clamped in the test fixture and the nail is driven straight through the cell body at a fixed speed. At the moment of penetration there is no fire, no smoke and no explosion.

Cross-Section Cut — A Harsher Test Than Penetration

Penetration punches a single hole; a cross-section cut saws the cell clean through. The damage is far greater than penetration — a condition that would essentially never occur in service, and precisely for that reason the most convincing demonstration of safety.

The footage below is the measurement taken after the cut. On the left is a multimeter; on the right, the cell that has been sawn through. The full 2 minutes 45 seconds is unedited and the voltage holds steady at around 4.0 V throughout — the cell is still functioning after being cut, with no voltage collapse from an internal short. A conventional lithium cell would already be in thermal runaway.

Measured Performance

NCM Discharge Rate Capability

From 0.1C to 5C, surface-modified NCM cathode material retains higher capacity than untreated material. Low internal resistance keeps performance strong at high discharge rates.
